简 介:The rapid development of Taijiquan in Oceania began in the 1980s. Fu Shengyuan, a Taijiquan expert from the mainland of China, emigrated to Australia and founded the International Taijiquan Institute. Dong Yingjie, whose school of Taijiquan has taken root in Hong Kong, had his daughter Dong Mo-li founded Taiji Martial Arts College in Australia. Taiwan Taijiquan master Huang Xingxian and other people also went to Australia to teach Taijiquan. The increase of Chinese immigrants in Australia and New Zealand and the frequent cultural exchanges have laid the foundation for the vigorous development of Taijiquan in Oceania. New Zealand is the second most influential country in Oceania after Australia. The development of Taijiquan in New Zealand is closely related to the overseas immigrants of the Chinese community. New Zealand’s Taijiquan development can be said to be in full bloom. Traditional Chinese schools of Taijiquan, such as Chen Style, Yang Style, Wu Style, Wuu Style, Sun Style, Zhao Bao Style and other styles, have been handed down in New Zealand. The instructors who taught Taijiquan in New Zealand in the early days were mainly Malaysian-Chinese. As there were many Malaysian immigrants in the early days, some of the Taijiquan masters came to New Zealand. Chinese immigration increased after the 1990s. The number of Taijiquan coaches in China is increasing gradually, especially after 2010, Taijiquan coaches from China have gradually entered the mainstream society and are well known by more Chinese and local people. Every year, World Taiji Day is held in Wellington, New Zealand, which is known as “the coolest small capital in the world”. More and more local people are actively participating in this anniversary.

简 介:Gerda Geddes was a pioneer who brought Taijiquan into Britain and spread it to other European countries and the United States. As a modern dancer born in Norway, she later specialized in psychology, hoping that dancing and psychotherapy could be integrated into a new healing system. She became attached to Taijiquan ever since she and her husband came to Shanghai, China in 1949. When she ran into an old man practicing Taijiquan at dawn, the dancer found that she no longer need create a new system because the Chinese realized her ideal hundreds of years ago. She said frankly that she felt like lightening coming down into her spine and immediately realized that this was what she had been looking for all her life. According to Geddes, she learned the traditional frame of Yang Chengfu from Choy Hok Peng and his son, disciples of Yang Chengfu as the descendant of Yang Style Taijiquan, in Hong Kong for three years starting in 1955. After completing her training in 1958, she returned to Britain. At that time, no one knew what Taijiquan was, so she had to go to every art performance school in London to demonstrate the art. Her first Taijiquan training class did not kick off until the year 1959 when she appeared on the British television screen to demonstrate the art to publicize its benefits to fitness. Her efforts finally put her course of Taijiquan onto the freshman course list of London Contemporary Dance School, which laid a solid foundation for its development in Britain.

简 介:The development of Taijiquan in Taiwan originated in the 1940s. According to history records, Chen Weiming’s disciples Xie Jinghu and Zhou Minyi founded a club and taught Taijiquan in Hsinchu, Taiwan in 1945, which were the pioneers to the development of Taijiquan in Taiwan. In order to promote martial arts in Taiwan, Xie and Zhou were organizing a martial arts performance, hoping that Chen Weiming (a famous Taijiquan master) could show on performance. In June 1948, Chen Weiming accepted the invitation and arrived in Taiwan by plane with Xu Wenfu and Chen Duoming. Taiwan’s local newspaper Shin Sheng Daily News, reported the news beforehand. On that day, the performance attracted many people and the atmosphere was very active. Chen Weiming also defeated a strong man who stood on the stage to challenge. Later, the reputation of “master of marital arts” by Chen Weiming was widely spread in Taiwan, which laid a solid foundation for the development of Taijiquan in Taiwan after 1949.

简 介:The spread of Taijiquan in Hong Kong and Macao approximately began before World War II. At that time, many mainland merchants, literati and masters of Taijiquan resided abroad or immigrated to Hong Kong, which gave an opportunity to the promotion of Taijiquan in Hong Kong and Macau. In addition, Hong Kong is geographically adjacent to Guangdong, Fujian and Guangxi Province, so cultural exchanges and dissemination are more convenient. Yang Style Taijiquan and Wu Style Taijiquan were first introduced in Hong Kong, while Chen, Sun, He Style or Zhaobao and Wuu Style Taijiquan later entered into Hong Kong and Macao successively. Taijiquan in Hong Kong and Macao is called as “Family School”, so Yang Style Taijiquan and Wu Style Taijiquan are called “Yang’s Family Taijiquan” and “Wu’s Family Taijiquan”.
