后殖民理论兴起以来,学界一直以主奴关系来解读后殖民语境下的主体构建,较为新近的研究已经意识到主体性是连续变化的谱系。学者们不再以“霸权”“侵略”等关键词来解读殖民主义的历史影响,而是以“矛盾”“模棱两可”等来说明权力的双向作用。劳伦斯四部以墨西哥为背景的小说描述了主人公内在的心理冲突,叙事线索也比较复杂,这恰好反映了边界状态下主体性的流变,这也正是这几部小说早前被忽视的重要价值。本书分别从身体、空间、宗教和社会组织几方面展开论述,阐释了主体与他者的对抗和对话对身份认同的深远影响。
