Annual Report on Religions in
China(2013)is contributed by two editors-in-chief and seven scholars from the
Institute of World Religions, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, together with
three experts from the State Administration for Religious Affairs, Sichuan
University and Henan Province Academy of Social Sciences.

“Predicament
both within and without” constitutes the background for
this year’s General Report.Incorporating theoretical analysis and positivist
research, the General Report focuses on the role religions play in China’s
social development and her global cultural strategy. In the theoretical analysis
section, it is pointed out that religions, and the respective value systems
they carry with them, are an important element of the Chinese cultural
tradition, and China’s religious culture should be redefined from the
perspective of global cultural strategy. The positivist research section gives
an overview of the various major religions in China during the year 2012.Bringing
their respective strengths into play, they have made positive contributions to
a steady and harmonious development of the society. To provide guidance for the
healthy development of religious organizations, governmental agencies involved
in the administration of religious affairs took initiatives to correct the
practice of “religions setting the stage for economy to
make a play”.The Report suggests that the whole society
should make an effort to better understand the function of religions under the
new situation, so that they can play a positive role in China’s social cultural
construction.

This year’s “Reports on
Major Religions” column presents seven reports, each
providing both a general review of a major religion and discussion on the most
prominent issues of the year.

“Report on
Buddhism” focuses on the problem of “Buddhist economy”, including the listing of
famous Buddhist mountains and temples, contracted management of temples, and
entrance ticket sale.It appeals to relevant governmental agencies to properly
hold their office and abide by the principle of separation of church and state.Operation
of the “field of blessing” is
to be respected for the survival and development of Buddhism.A social
environment is to be created that is helpful to the improvement of spirituality
of Buddhist faith.Wealth accumulation by abusing Buddhist resources has to be
rooted out.

“Report on
Taoism” emphasizes issues such as academic studies on
Taoist health maintenance techniques, as well as their social propagation and
facility building. It is pointed out that the Taoist health maintenance culture
is becoming more and more important in today’s society.

“Report on
Christianity” summarizes the spread of “Oriental Flash”(also known as the cult of “The Omnipotent God”), and gives an in-depth
discussion on how to prevent destructive cults in the disguise of Christianity. It
is pointed out that prevention and management of such cultic organizations is a
long-term battle that covers various aspects such as politics, law, economics
and culture. Both the government and the whole society are faced with the
difficult problem of helping the followers and victims of cultic organizations
to overcome the psychological injury inflicted on them. This problem cannot be
solved by the police force. Both material and spiritual support by the whole
society are needed, as well as necessary psychological help.

“Report on
Catholicism” closely follows the impacts of European
Catholicism on Chinese Catholic organizations, paying special attention to the
resignation of Benedict XVI and recent changes in the Vatican. How such changes
would affect the future of the Catholic Church in China and the relationship
between China and Vatican is considered in the Report.

“Report on
Confucianism” pays special attention to the rise of
Community Confucianism. It is argued that in a background of moral crisis and
reconstruction, Confucianism’s turn to the civil society is picking up pace. The
Report discusses the prosperity of Confucian Academies, seeing this as a
phenomenon of the year that demands our attention, indicating not only the
revival of traditional Confucian educational facilities, but also the fact that
the reconstruction of Confucianism has entered the phase of organization.

“Report on Folk
Religions” focuses on a “map of
Chinese faith traditions”.It emphasizes the “Chinese character” and “cultural entity” of the genealogy of Chinese
faith traditions; in other words, the symbolic and material manifestations in
different places of the “core values of the Chinese” and the beliefs in them.Special attention is paid to the main
trends of development in the year 2012 of folk religion temples both in the “diffusion region” and the “centre region”.The Report also offers
reflection on the balance of religious ecology in China.

“Report on Hot
Issues” is directed at the administration of religious
affairs. It surveys and summarizes the major works in 2012 by the State
Administration of Religious Affairs.New ideas and basic principles embodied in
its operation, as well as problems and future development are discussed in
detail.

This year’s “Special Report” is based on field studies in Kaifeng and Nanyang by a research team
from the Institute of World Religion. The project, “A
Comparative Study of Religious Ecology in Kaifeng and Nanyang, Henan Province”, has shown that inappropriate policy on religions is the main
reason that has led to an imbalance of religious ecology. As the
institutionalization of each religion varies, a rigidly uniform policy results
in different outcomes. Some religions have taken a serious blow and found it
difficult to recover(as in the cases of Buddhism,
Taoism and folk religions in Nanyang), while others can
thrive in spite of bouts of suppression(as in the case
of Christianity in Nanyang). The Report points out that
in a time of social transformation, while the various religions are faced with
the impacts of modernization, secularization and urbanization, the powers that
be should reconsider its place and proper role in a religious ecology heading
toward plurality and harmonious co-existence.
