本书旨在根据西塞罗、普鲁塔克、撒路斯提乌斯、苏埃托尼乌斯等人的记述以及恺撒本人的作品《战记》,在公元前1世纪罗马社会的大背景下,复原了恺撒的一生。作者将恺撒的一生分为三个阶段:从童年到成为罗马共和国的执政官,在此过程中恺撒展露了其政治才能;成为执政官后如何通过对外征服确立其崇高的威望,在此过程中,他展现了与其政治才能相当的军事才能;最后,通过内战战胜其政敌,恺撒成为事实上的君主。
