15px;">作者费子智修习汉语，曾于1923~1949年底有近三十年时光游历中国，对中国以及中国历史文化可谓饱含深情，在书中时刻不忘将唐帝国与罗马帝国比较，将中国与欧洲比较。连带着，作者对李世民的历史功绩高度认可，不仅将李世民定义为一位屹立于欧亚大陆的伟大帝王，也盛赞了其在中国广袤的土地上重建大一统的政治秩序、拯救东亚文明于崩溃和毁灭的边缘，并在远东地区保存和传播“世界历史上最伟大的”中华文明之功绩。</span></p><p><span style="font-size: 15px;"> </span></p><p><span style="font-size: 15px;">那么，关于阅读本书，从传记的角度去考察，一个简单而基本的问题应该首先可以探讨：为什么要为唐太宗写传？</span></p><p><span style="font-size: 15px;"> </span></p><p><span style="font-size: 15px;">首先本质上，唐王朝处于中国古代社会的王朝鼎盛之期，李世民及其统治集团作为唐王朝的主要开创者、奠基者居功至伟，要认识中国古代君主政治的本质，唐太宗李世民无疑是个理想对象。而考虑本书的成书时代背景，其背后的意图，无疑是想通过唐太宗的传记来彻底改变当时的欧洲人对于明清中国腐败无能的成见，唤醒欧美读者对于中国的重新理解。童岭老师将之总结为，“二战”阴云前夜的唐代名君想象。他指出，书中的一些地方，从纯粹史学角度考虑，或有可以相商之处，但考虑到费子智对于中国的热爱，以及他唤醒欧美人对于当时积弱积贫的中国的信心，此书功绩甚伟。</span></p><p><span 15px;">童岭老师认为，我们阅读这些海外传记时，一方面固然要注意其描写天可汗李世民正面的文本叙述与笔法，另一方面，也要充分留心他们为什么写李世民的言外之意，也就是如何从唐代看现实中国的文化特质。故而不能单单就传记谈传记，在这些海外传记光与影的流连中，后者尤其是我们作为本土学者要引起关注的地方。</span></p><p><span style="font-size: 15px;">
