Ⅷ Basic Information on Participation of Chinese NGOs in International Development

摘要

Looking back on history, we can see that the emergence of Chinese NGOs of a certain scale has a close relationship with humanitarian aid, including both the Indian Ocean Tsunami in 2004 and the Nepal Earthquake in 2015. In providing humanitarian aid during these two natural disasters, Chinese NGOs mobilized the public to donate, and carried out various emergency relief projects and successive reconstruction projects in the stricken countries. In December 2004, after the Indian Ocean Earthquake and Tsunami, according to deployment by the Chinese government, donations from the public were received by the Red Cross Society of China, the local Red Cross Society, the China Charity Federation as well as the local Charity Federation uniformly. The Red Cross Society of China was the first responder to the Indian Ocean Earthquake and Tsunami. This is the first time that the Red Cross Society of China provided large-scale humanitarian aid abroad since the founding of new China. The Red Cross Society of China also cooperated with the China Charity Federation to participate in post-disaster reconstruction work for the stricken countries, including the China-Indonesia Friendship Village in Indonesia, the China-Thailand Friendship Village and repair of schools and hospitals in Thailand, the China-Sri Lanka Red Cross Village in Sri Lanka, the houses for victims in Maldives, the disaster preparedness centers for the community in Myanmar, and the provision of relief materials etc. By November 2015, the Red Cross Society of China had received a total social donations of 427,000,000 Yuan in, materials with a value of 15.60 million yuan, and had donated 240,000,000 yuan to 11 countries stricken by the Indian Ocean Tsunami (Xinhua News Agency, 2005). Besides, the China Foundation for Poverty Alleviation cooperated with the Mercy Corps and donated medication with a value of 44,380,000 yuan to areas affected by the Indian Ocean Tsunami.
