Religious Stratification:Economic Status and Religious Identity

摘要

Drawing on the dataset of the Chinese General Social Survey 2006,this study addresses the economic consequences of religious identity in contemporary China. Hypotheses based on the fair share and fair play perspectives are tested using simultaneous equation modeling and structural equation modeling. The findings do not lend full support to either perspective. Specifically, religious followers,on average, are disadvantaged relative to nonreligious people in terms of their income, but such an economic disadvantage is mainly attributed to religious followers’ lower educational attainment rather than extant institutional arrangements.
