Gulangyu’s Emergence as a Center of Sino-Foreign Linguistic Interaction—A Long-Term Macro-Regional Perspective
摘要
Between the mid-19th and mid-20th centuries the Gulangyu island of Xiamen played a significant role in the linguistic interaction process between Hokkien Chinese(also known as Minnanhua 闽南话 or Southern Min)and various foreign languages, most notably English. During the 1850s a Romanization method of Hokkien(known as Peh-oe-ji白话字)developed among Gulangyu-based American and British Protestant missionaries which later became widely used throughout the South China Sea region. The present article investigates the historical processes which led to Gulangyu’s emergence as a center of Hokkien-Foreign linguistic interaction. The article argues that Southern Fujian’s long-term history as a source of Chinese emigration to Southeast Asia played a decisive role in the early history of the Hokkien-Foreign interaction. The forced opening of Xiamen as a “treaty port” after the Treaty of Nanjing(1842)created an opportunity for many missionaries so far working among Hokkien-speaking overseas Chinese populations in Southeast Asia to continue their work in Southern Fujian. Similarly to a large number of other foreigners, they chose Gulangyu as their main residence due to its proximity to the Xiamen main island and its preferable living conditions compared to it.
