简 介:Li Xinfeng Ladies and gentlemen, distinguished guests, experts and scholars, media friends from China, the African Union and African countries, good day to you all!Welcome to the 9 Meeting of the China-Africa Think Tanks Forum held in Beijing both offline and online. The meeting we have today is attended by diplomatic envoys from the AU and 8 African countries, and representatives of academic institutions, think tanks and mass media from China and Africa. As the Executive President of the China-Africa Institute(CAI),the organizer of this meeting, please allow me to extend our warm welcome and sincere thanks on behalf of our staffs for your presence to the meeting. The Forum of China-Africa Cooperation(FOCAC),which was jointly launched by China and Africa in 2000,has been an an important platform for collective dialogues and an effective mechanism for comprehensive cooperation between China and Africa. The FOCAC has created many unprecedented records in the diplomatic history of China since its establishment. It is not only the first cooperation mechanism jointly launched by China and developing countries, but also China’s first cooperation mechanism for a whole continent;the Beijing Summit in 2006 was China’s first experience to hold a large-scale summit;the Johannesburg Summit in 2015 was the first time for China to co-host a summit with another country on a foreign territory;the Beijing Summit in 2018 set a new record in China’s host diplomacy in terms of level and scale. By fully reflecting Africa’s important position in China’s diplomacy, these historical coordinates are the best interpretation to the great importance that China has been attaching to China-Africa relations.

简 介:It was in March 2020 that COVID-19 hit the African continent. Among the last regions of the world to be affected by the pandemic, Africa is also one of the continents where the virus is wreaking less havoc. According to the most recent WHO figures, Africa has to date 1,061,462 confirmed cases against 13,469,747 cases in the Americas, 4,378,281 cases in South-East Asia, 4,311,271 cases in Europe and 1,939,204 cases in the eastern Mediterranean. In terms of the number of deaths, Africa has 22,195 confirmed cases compared to 469,322 cases in the Americas, 220,454 cases in Europe, 78,498 cases in Southeast Asia and 51,422 cases in the Eastern Mediterranean. These low figures, compared to the number of inhabitants (1,216,000,000), can be explained not only by the promptness of the reaction of the public authorities, but also by a judicious use of international aid, in particular that of the Chinese partners. Another explanation put forward to account for the resilience of Africa concerns the effectiveness of indigenous therapies, the best known being the “Covid-Organics” promoted by the President of Madagascar Andry Rajoelina and the anti-Covid drink of the Archbishop from Douala, Bishop Samuel Kléda (Cameroon). It is in this way that the social sciences in Africa have integrated the issue of the Coronavirus into their thinking, thus reviving the issue of “local knowledge”.

简 介:For many foreigners, a visit to China today is a bit like a pilgrimage to the future! Trip to Utopia Island! Humanity in the making! Far from the obscuring clichés that once encumbered the minds of the inhabitants of Solomon’s House of the New Atlantis of Bacon, proud censors of “the Chinese, a singular, ignorant, cowardly and stupid people” (Bacon, New Atlantis). It is interesting to see how history itself is in charge of correcting hasty and self-confident talkers. Because, China of this new millennium, is in itself the Salomon House realized. It is the sublime “Foundation [which] aims to know the causes, and the secret movement of things; and to push back the boundaries of the Human Empire in order to achieve all things possible” (Ibid.). Here, beats the heart of a new world in the making. Minister of Foreign Affairs of Russia and keen observer of the profound changes of our world, Sergueï Lavrov, dared a projection: We are witnessing a “change of world” and more of the advent of the “post-Western World”! According to Lavrov, all the disorders orchestrated by the West across the planet (demolition of entire states, looting of nations, a massacre of peoples, sacking of territories, multiplication of hotbeds of tension, etc.), do not prevent the rest of the world from growing and co-operating. Evidence of this progress is numerous. Two significant examples follow for illustration: the “Greater Eurasia Partnership” and FOCAC.
